In the past, Italy was ruled under a monarchy in the name of the Kingdom of Italy, which was in power from 1861 then ended in 1946.
Before the Kingdom of Italy was established, the current Italian territory consisted of many kingdoms and important city-states. In other words, Italy had not yet been unified at that time.

Until the middle of the 19th century, the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont was one of the main kingdoms in the Italian territory. Under the leadership of King Victor Emmanuel II, King of the House of Savoy unified Italy as one. This event is known as the Italian Unification.

After King Victor Emmanuel II unification of Italy was successful. He established the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, becoming the first monarch of the Kingdom of Italy.

King Victor Emmanuel II reigned until he died in 1878. His son later ascended the throne in the name of King Umberto I. Then, after 22 years of reign, Umberto I died in 1900, leaving his son to ascend the throne. King Victor Emmanuel III.

And it was during the reign of Victor Emmanuel III that the Italian monarchy of the House of Savoy ended.

In 1922, the far-right political group, Fascist, under the leadership of Benito Mussolini, led the Blackshirts to invade Rome to seize the country's dominance. This event resulted in the people of Italy losing faith in King Victor Emmanuel III.

That's because Victor Emmanuel III allowed fascists to take power easily, even though he had enough royal ability to deter and suppress action. (as if it were a rebellion) of these fascists. Importantly, he also appointed Mussolini as the new Prime Minister of Italy.

As a result, the people of Italy believed that their King had supported and joined the fascist dictatorship of Mussolini. And he was going to destroy the constitutional monarchy, which is the regime that his grandfather (Lord Victor Emmanuel II) had laid the foundation since the foundation of the Kingdom of Italy.

Italians' loyalty and admiration for Victor Emmanuel the 3rd are constantly diminishing. Until 1943, when Italy was on the verge of being defeated in World War II, with enormous pressure from the Italian people. (who had been dissatisfied with Mussolini for a long time) King Victor Emmanuel the 3rd decided to remove Mussolini from the prime minister of Italy.

But this decision of the King was too late. Because now the faith in the monarchy of the Italian people almost no longer exists.

Finally, in May 1946, King Victor Emmanuel the 3rd decided to abdicate and gave the throne to his son, Prince Umberto, to reign as King Umberto II.

But Umberto II was King of Italy for less than a month. On June 2, 1946, the people of Italy held a referendum on whether they wanted another monarchy. The result of the referendum is that more than 54.26% of Italian citizens wish for Italy to become a republic. At the same time, another 45.74% of the people want Italy to continue the monarchy.

The outcome of this referendum ended the Italian monarchy under the House of Savoy. After about 85 years of power in Italy, Italy has become a republic. In the name of the Italian Republic.
